Leo Matsuoka
Violinist & Violist
Leo Matsuoka is a violinist and teaching assistant at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he studies with Alex Gonzalez as a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music under the guidance of Oleh Krysa and Robin Scott and earned his Master of Music degree at the University of Delaware, where he studied with Ryan Meehan and Jeffrey Myers of the Calidore String Quartet.
An active chamber musician, Leo has collaborated with members of the Emerson, Ying, Verona, Calidore, and Dali Quartets through performances, coachings, and festival residencies. He is a founding member of both the Trellis String Quartet and the Genesee Piano Trio and was awarded the John Celentano Award for Excellence in Chamber Music upon graduating from Eastman.
As an orchestral musician, Leo recently served as Assistant Concertmaster of Symphony in C and has held numerous leadership positions, including concertmaster and principal second violinist in a variety of orchestral ensembles. His previous teachers include Iryna Krechkovsky and Ayako Sugaya.
Originally from Southern California, Leo began formal violin studies at age ten and attended the Instrumental Music Conservatory at the Orange County School of the Arts.
